SELENA C

Let us introduce you to Selena C, affectionately known as Ugly to those nearest and dearest, a name that couldn’t be further from the truth once you see this mare in action. With her striking brown coat and strong presence, Ugly might not have started out as the classic looker, but she’s always had the heart and ability to turn heads in the ring. And as for that name? Well, it’s a story in itself.

Ugly, born in 2012 and standing a solid 16.2hh, is a proud New Zealand Sports Horse bred by Vicki Prendergast. Her sire, the legendary Cardento, and her dam, Soffee, set the foundation for a mare with power, precision, and a heart full of courage. It’s no surprise, then, that Ugly has risen to become a Grand Prix competitor, with a list of achievements already stacking up. But let’s backtrack a bit to see how this remarkable mare made her way to the top.

In January 2024, Melissa Blair was on the lookout for a special horse to fill the shoes of her much loved grand prix partner Zidora, who was retiring after years of success. But as every rider knows, finding a horse with the same heart and willingness as a trusted partner is no easy task. Enter Ugly.

Melissa recalls, "I didn’t think I would find another mare who could fill Dora’s shoes, but I was assured that Ugly was something exceptional. I hopped on a plane to New Zealand, and after jumping just one cross rail, it was clear: Ugly was the horse for me." The bond was instant, and even though Ugly had only known one rider—Vicki, who had bred and trained her—Melissa felt a deep sense of trust in the process. After all, when you know, you know.

Vicki had a long history with Ugly, having bred, trained, and campaigned her all the way to Grand Prix level. "Vicki referred to Ugly like one of her daughters," Melissa remembers. "She had photos and videos from when Ugly was a foal all the way up to them jumping Grand Prix together. I could tell how much Vicki cared for her, and I knew it would be hard for her to let go." But Vicki knew Ugly was ready for her next chapter, and so, in a bittersweet moment, she handed over the reins to Melissa.

Ugly’s competition career has been nothing short of impressive. Together with Melissa, she tackled their first Mini Prix, Grand Prix, and World Cups in 2024, with standout performances that have left everyone in awe. But the one moment that stands out the most so far? The Australian Titles of 2024, where Ugly was nothing short of brilliant throughout the competition, showcasing her consistency, bravery, and willingness to go above and beyond for her rider.

On the outside, Ugly may seem all business, but underneath, she’s got a personality that’s as quirky as they come. To those she loves, she is brave, honest, and kind. But to strangers? Well, she’s cautious—very cautious. And as for her habits? Ugly’s particular about her truck rides. When it’s time to travel, she holds it all in—literally! The thought of relieving herself on the truck is a little too much for her to handle, so she’ll hang on all the way until she can find a suitable spot. However, when faced with a 1.60m jump from a questionable distance? No hesitation at all—she’s all in!

But despite her somewhat awkward beginnings—big ears, a droopy bottom lip, and a long, plain head—Ugly grew into a mare who is anything but ordinary. “When she was a foal, Ugly was plain compared to her brother, who had flashy white markings.” But despite her early looks, she’s always had the heart to match any competitor out there. And with a pedigree that includes the renowned granddam Sanderson, who herself had a successful international career and was even leased to Brazil for the 2000 Sydney Olympics eventing team—Ugly certainly has a pedigree worthy of attention.

When it comes to food, Ugly is no different from any other horse—she loves the green grass and rich lucerne hay, although she doesn’t get to indulge in these treats nearly as much as she’d like. Her biggest dislike? Not being allowed to have them!

So, what’s next for this incredible mare? Well, it’s all about building the partnership between Melissa and Ugly, one step at a time. The goal is to continue progressing at the Grand Prix and World Cup level, and who knows? There are some big events ahead, including the GDP, a competition both horse and rider are looking forward to with much anticipation. But above all, Melissa says, “The long-term plan is just to enjoy the ride and see what we can achieve together. I don’t ride full-time, as I have a career and family to balance, so every ride is a gift, and I treasure each one.”

And with a horse like Ugly by her side, the journey is bound to be full of thrilling moments, hard-earned victories, and plenty of quirky stories to tell. The sky’s the limit for this pair, and we can't wait to see where their adventure takes them next!
