Quel filou 16

Quel Filou 16—better known as "Phil"—is not only an expert at tackling world-class courses, he also excels at keeping  everyone around him thoroughly entertained. With a personality as big as his jump (and an ego to match), this cheeky bay Holsteiner has made quite a name for himself in the showjumping world.

Bred by Bernd Moor in Ellerhopp, Phil boasts an exceptional pedigree. His sire, Quiwi Dream, carries the legendary Quidam De Revel in his bloodline, while his dam, W-Zora, brings the influence of Lord and Corrado I. With such powerful genetics, it’s no surprise that Phil has become a force to be reckoned with on the international stage. That said, Phil would probably tell you he was born legendary—he certainly acts like it.

But Phil wasn’t always part of the plan. In fact, he was a surprise addition to Amelia Douglass' string. While on a trip to Europe scouting young horses for herself and her clients, Amelia had her eyes set on competing and selling her Grand Prix mare, Upper Class Z. Then came Phil. After watching Amber ride him, Amelia was instantly smitten—without even sitting on him. Luckily, her mum was there in person and made the decision to buy him on the spot. And just like that, Phil strutted into Amelia’s life.

Since then, this dynamic duo has been making waves. Some of their biggest achievements include: 4th place in the 1.50m 3* GCT Grand Prix in Doha 2024, representing Australia in the Nations Cup team at Peelbergen in 2024 and 4th overall in the Australian Senior Championships 2023.

One of their most memorable moments? Qualifying and competing in the 1.55m 3* Grand Prix in Peelbergen. Facing a strong and technical track, Phil delivered an incredible round, proving he belongs among the best. But of course, Phil already knew that.

Phil has been trained by some of the top names in the sport, including Christian Kukuk and Kellie Allen. But while he may have an impressive competition record, it’s his larger-than-life personality that truly makes him unforgettable.

Phil is, in every sense, a trickster. His name "Quel Filou" translates to "what a rascal," and he lives up to it daily. He’s playful to the point of mischief—constantly biting, picking things up, and demanding attention. Like a toddler who had too much sugar, he’s curious about everything and has no problem throwing a tantrum when things don’t go his way. When excited, he even lets out a squeal while being ridden, especially if he touches a fence. And if you ever see him sticking his tongue out and playing with it while hand-walking, don’t be alarmed—it’s just Phil being Phil.

When it comes to food, Phil’s tastes are… refined. While most horses would go crazy for carrots or apples, Phil’s absolute favorite treat is bananas. Yes, bananas. And if he sees one, you better be ready to hand it over immediately or prepare for some serious side-eye. But as much as he loves his snacks, he loves his independence even more. If he feels restricted or isn’t allowed to do what he wants, expect a full-blown tantrum that could rival a soap opera meltdown.

Thanks to the incredible support of sponsors like Chaballo, Vet Gold, and Horse Power Feeds, Phil is always equipped to perform at his best. Amelia swears by her super-flat Butet saddle, a choice that often surprises people but works perfectly for their partnership.

Looking ahead, Amelia has big goals for Phil. Representing Australia on more occasions, aiming for the World Games and the Olympics, and continuously pushing their limits are all on the agenda. In the short term, the focus is on securing an MER for the 2026 World Games. But beyond the structured goals, Amelia’s approach is simple: take it day by day, let Phil show her what he’s capable of, and enjoy the journey (and try not to let him rule the world).

With a heart as big as his talent and a personality to match, Phil is a force to be reckoned with. The road ahead is bright, and if history is any indication, there are plenty more surprises—and plenty more podium finishes—on the horizon.

See you at the Classic, Phil!
